Biography
As Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange wields arcane spells and mystical artifacts to defend the planet from evil threats.
With these hands
Recognized around the world as one of the most brilliant neurosurgeons, Stephen Strange's arrogance and self-centered nature grew along with his skill until his ego far outweighed his career, subsequently shutting himself off from only the most wealthy and influential patients. Everything changed for the man one fateful night when a near-fatal car accident left Strange with severely damaged nerves in both hands and a diagnosis that he would never be able to operate again.

Knowing he depended on his medical abilities to support his affluent lifestyle, Strange began seeking a source of healing for his hands until the search drained him of his resources and he faced a dark and uncertain future. After crossing all valid cures from his list, he followed a path of rumor and legend to Tibet for a more esoteric hideaway. There, high in the mountains, he met the Ancient One, a master mystic, and had his first glimpse of a much larger universe.
Strange embarked on a journey to learn the art of magic under the tutelage of the Ancient One when he realized that the art of medicine would forever be closed to him. The former doctor excelled at his classes and became as skilled at spells and sorcery as he ever was at surgery. The Ancient One saw in Strange a highly gifted apprentice and, after years of schooling, endowed him with powerful artifacts that would allow him to protect the Earth from many and varied threats.
Strange returned to the West, establishing a new practice in New York City and establishing himself in his destined role as a wise, occult advisor and master of the mystical arts.
magical man
Doctor Strange's powers and abilities originally came from tapping into alien entities and aircraft, chief among them the Vishanti, a triumvirate of powerful beings who granted magic-users temporary access to their essence through spells. Strange, during his early years as a mage, appealed to the Vishanti to aid in his battles against various forms of magical danger and creatures, culminating in him receiving the title of Sorcerer Supreme when the Ancient One relinquished it upon his death.
As his career progressed, Strange lost and regained both his title as Sorcerer Supreme and his connection to the Vishanti several times due to injuries or extreme challenges to his authority. During these times, he looked for other forms of sorcery to use, including so-called catastrophe or chaos magic, blood spells, and demon possession. Eventually, the Doctor found himself returning to more traditional sources of magic after dark forms periods, with any flirtations with the dark inevitably affecting him in some way.
Strange's primary artifact is known as the Eye of Agamotto, an amulet endowed with the power of the being it was baptized for and the ability to bestow light powers, truth, and plane travel, among other things. In addition, the Doctor also uses his cloak of levitation to fly and maintains a vast library of mystical tomes in his New York home. Recently, he has taken up the ancient Ax of Angarruumus for both offensive and defensive purposes.
Direct opposition
A man in Stephen Strange's important position is sure to create plenty of enemies, which is why the Sorcerer Supreme is expected to claim some of any champion's most fearsome foes. Baron Mordo became Strange's first opponent when the two studied simultaneously under the Ancient One and Mordo proved that he cared more about selfishly gaining power than helping others. As Strange learned to let go of his own ego, he saw the same darkness in his fellow student and warned their teacher about it. Mordo swore eternal enmity against Strange, then transformed himself into the Doctor's old foe.

Perhaps the greatest and most powerful of all of Strange's enemies is the dreaded Dormammu, a magical entity from another dimension whose desire for power and dominion over the Earth plane has placed him in direct opposition to the Sorcerer Supreme several times. Strange has managed to defeat Dormammu at almost every turn, but sometimes by the skin of his teeth, thanks to the Dread One's near-omnipotent power on his own plane and his deft manipulation of Earth lackeys and sycophants.
Doctor Strange's other enemies include the wizard Yandroth, the demons Nightmare and Shuma-Gorath, the earthly despot Doctor Doom, and Umar the Unrelenting, Dormammu's sister.
Allies and affiliates
Though consciously a loner, Strange has opened his heart and home to a few loved ones he can call friends. Chief among these individuals is Wong, a seemingly humble servant on the surface, who is in fact a master of martial arts and an accomplished scholar. Wong tends to Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, a stately mansion in New York's Greenwich Village, protecting it and its master from outsiders while improving his own skills. Doctor Strange and Wong have traveled through dark and light together as employer and employee, as well as brothers.
During Strange's first forays into the Dark Dimension and earning Dormammu's wrath, he met a young woman named Clea who would become not only his student and partner, but also his lover. Eventually, Clea left Strange's side after many adventures to ascend to the dominions of the Dark Dimension, but the two have found each other time and time again to renew their bonds, even in the most glaring of situations.
After a brief period of inactivity as a wizard, Strange came into contact with two individuals who would form an important corner of his life, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk. Together, the three men - also joined shortly after by the Silver Surfer - formed the basis of an experiment in teamwork known as the Defenders, a group of heroes formed by Strange to carry out missions on a sporadic basis and without any formal structure. . Many versions of the Defenders followed the original 'non-team', with Strange at the forefront of many of them as 'members' came and went as they pleased.

Strange also joined a phalanx of supernatural champions called the Midnight Sons, as well as taking part in a secret conference of some of Earth's most intelligent and deliberate champions. These Illuminati only came together under the most extreme circumstances until they were torn apart by internal strife and disagreements. Strange himself questioned his own participation in the group on several occasions and while he called some of its members friends, he never quite warmed to its intended purpose.
While he himself only briefly toyed with the idea of operating as a traditional "superhero," Doctor Strange's ties to the ranks of costumed and codename champions around the world were quite strong. In particular, his many collaborations with Spider-Man have led to an enduring friendship, and his relationship with the Avengers led to actual membership in the Doctor in more recent times. More often than not, Strange has mostly gone it alone, knowing full well that his expertise as a singular mystical warrior makes for a sometimes lonely path.

The Chronicles
Stephen Strange's list of achievements and adventures testify to his zeal as Earth's magical protector, some of which even cross over into the realm of legend.
When the infamous Dracula, Lord of the Vampires, grew too powerful and cast his shadow over the planet, Strange gathered a spell called the Montesi Formula and cast it to seemingly destroy every vampire on the Earth plane. Later, the Doctor heeded the Vishanti's call to become a soldier in the War of the Seven Spheres, a conflict he fought in another reality for five thousand years, but only played out on Earth for several months.
During a reunion with the original Defenders, Strange and his allies unwittingly transformed themselves into a totalitarian regime called the Order, until the threat of a new trick by Strange's old adversary Yandroth forced them to reclaim their right attitude and defeat the wizard. After that adventure, the Doctor took possession of the powerful Soul Gem as a member of the Illuminati and joined forces with a small band of Earthly heroes to rid the world of the rampaging Hulk once and for all. When the Illuminati later reconvened, Strange tested his abilities against a series of incursions through other universes until the main universe dissolved after one such encounter and was remade by Doctor Doom as his "Battleworld", complete with Strange as the sheriff of the patchwork world .

Returned to his proper status as Sorcerer Supreme in the wake of Doom's defeat and the re-creation of the universe, Doctor Strange continues his vigilance for supernatural threats and threats to Earth while honing his mystical abilities to combat them.
