introduction

With great trepidation I get behind the wheel2022 Subaru WRX.

I, like many others, have always viewed the WRX as a true driver's car that offers something unique among its competitors - all-wheel drive and a warbling boxer exhaust. But this new generation seems to have changed its tune.

Colleague Rob Margeit recently remarked that theWRXhas eschewed its hooligan beginnings and traded them in for a newfound adult character more apt for the aging customer base it once appealed to.

But is this the best way for such a revered name tag?

It goes hand-in-hand with Subaru's decision not to offer a full STI version, as is usual for the brand when a new WRX comes out. It points to a more refined, grown-up version of the Larrikin WRX we know and love.

The new WRX certainly looks different than usual. The 2022 WRX now wears plastic trim around the lower parts of the car, forgoing its angry, angular design for an apparent off-road look.

Prices have increased with the new generation, with most qualities in the lineup being more expensive than their previous counterparts. But the 2022 Subaru WRX tS CVT variant on test is a new flagship variant in the range and costs$56,990 before road expenses.

This price increase brings it closer to popular high-performance cars like theVolkswagen Golf RAndToyota GR Yaris. They're nowhere near the same in terms of size or body style, but offer similar levels of performance with their turbocharged all-wheel drivetrains.

Every 2022 WRX is equipped with oneSupercharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer enginethat outputs202kW/350NmToall four wheels. Seemingly inconsistent with the car's capabilities is the fact that the top-of-the-line tS variant is fitted with just onecontinuously variable transmission. According to Subaru, the transmission is divided into eight gear ratios to simulate gears that can be selected with paddle shifters.

What makes the tS variants stand out is the addition of adaptive dampers, more advanced driving mode selectors, unique wheel designs, and tS and STI branding.

Within

The most obvious of all the changes in the 2022 Subaru WRX is the huge, portrait-mounted central touchscreen embedded in the dash, but we'll deliberately ignore that until the next section.

The tS variant's cabin boasts Ultrasuede upholstery to ensure your bum doesn't slide around too much during hard cornering, while the dashboard and door panel surfaces are covered in soft-touch materials. The top dash parts of the instrument panel and above the infotainment screen are made of hard plastic.

It's nice to see that a sunroof comes standard on all but the base variants of the WRX. The shift lever in automatic variants is almost comically large. It's a big bulbous thing poking out of the center console that feels awkward to use, though maybe it was just me.

Door pockets offer plenty of room for bottles and small items, and are helpfully lined with felt to reduce rattling and noise - a nice touch. Likewise, the sides of the center console are lined with soft-touch material to ensure knees don't get pinched when rounding corners.

The two benches at the front offer numerous adjustment options thanks to eight-way adjustable memory seats and are heated at the same time. In fact, the two outer rear seats also score points with heating. The headrests have a cool ergonomic tilt feature that's super easy to get in just the right spot.

In terms of storage, the WRX has a small slot in front of the shifter for phones, keys and the like, although it's a real flaw that the spec list doesn't include cell phone charging.

Driver space is comfortable, with a high driving position that provides good visibility over the hood's nostril. The second row offers a surprising amount of space for the passengers. There's plenty of room for your legs and a big enough slot to tuck your feet under the seats. However, headroom for taller occupants like me is limited at 194 cm.

It seems like there's plenty of trunk space for a sedan when you open the rear-most gooseneck-hinged door, but according to Subaru, there's only411Lspace inside. In any case, there was enough space to load backpacks and camera gear.

However, you have to drag large objects over a high trunk edge. Not ideal for families who would be better served with the WRX Sportswagon.

infotainment and connectivity

The new 2022 Subaru WRX gets an 11.6-inch color touchscreen mounted in portrait mode. It's embedded in the dash instead of being a glued-on tablet like you see on some other cars.

It uses a beautiful starry sky background to display relevant features in a grid/tile format, while the climate control controls are located at the bottom of the screen. There aren't any shortcut keys next to the screen, although you can control some functions like track skip, volume, source and voice control on the steering wheel.

The tS model has a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and I loved it. It features really high sound clarity and good, punchy bass that reverberates throughout the cabin.

It runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but not wirelessly. You need to connect your phone to one of the two USB-A ports to activate it. I tried CarPlay for most of the week as I wasn't a fan of the car's standard satellite navigation display. The smartphone mirroring system is displayed in a neat portrait format that I hadn't seen before.

Subaru's infotainment software controls are sometimes slow to respond to touch inputs and are particularly laggy when entering navigation instructions. That's why I switched to CarPlay when I would normally get by with a car's native system.

security and technology

As an automatic model, the Subaru WRX tS scores with a number of active safety measures, while its manual WRX alternatives don't. That means our car is serviced by Subaru's EyeSight safety systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane centering, adaptive cruise control and speed sign recognition.

It also has blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist, which is standard across the range.

Subaru's driver monitoring system is one of the most persistent I've come across, and will regularly make judgments about whether or not a driver is paying attention by raising an alarm. The new generation Subaru WRX has not undergone local ANCAP safety tests at the time of this review.

value for money

Subaru products are covered by a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty. You are also covered by Limited Price Service for the same period. Three years are said to cost $1267, or five years cost $2366. These services are recommended every 12 months or every 15,000 km, whichever comes first.

As the flagship model variant of the WRX lineup, the $56,990 tS variant is priced to compete with the Volkswagen Golf R and GTI, which cost $65,990 and $54,990 respectively. Admittedly, the WRX lineup starts out cheaper than the performance Golfs. However, it is more expensive than the Hyundai i30 N Premium.

While the Hyundai doesn't boast all-wheel drive like the WRX, it's still one of our favorite performance carsdrive, and is worth a look when considering your next performance car.

Subaru says the WRX tS automatic sips 8.5L/100km on a combined fuel cycle, but our experience was different. After a week of riding around town, along with some spirited sprints up Mount Macedon, our tS returned15.0l/100kmfuel rating. This is excessive for a turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder car the size of the WRX, performance car or not. Subaru recommends at least 95 RON when refueling.

Drive

For all the visual indicators that Subaru has matured its WRX, the driving part was where I was most concerned about its rate of change. At least the supercharged boxer engine under the bonnet is known, but it now has a displacement of 2.4 liters. The power has increased by 5kW202kWoverall, although torque output has stayed the same350Nm.

This drive is also sent symmetrically by Subarusall wheel drive. Along with the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires fitted to our tester, the system reliably puts as much power as possible on the road without sacrificing traction. The grip is maintained very well in all conditions, especially in the wet.

Pressing your foot against the firewall makes the drivetrain feel very responsive, resulting in a nudge in the back as the tires transfer power to the ground. It's a much more linear delivery than I've experienced on old WRXs that were plagued by low-rpm turbo lag.

Unfortunately, the burst of power is no longer accentuated by a lilting Boxer exhaust note. The WRX really could have used a variable exhaust system because it's disappointingly quiet. You can hear the car if you're in a parking garage with the windows down, but it's pretty extreme lengths to hear a high-performance car.

Even on the negatives, I found it really difficult to gel with the CVT in a performance car. It's an odd feel where it basically does everything you need it to do, but feels very odd in practice. It rarely found itself in the right power band for what I wanted, which ended up frustrating me and making me wish I was behind the wheel of a six-speed manual. Of course, once you're in the sport modes, experience helps, but the CVT sadly left me cold.

It should be noted that the CVT is shifted to eight gears that can be selected with steering wheel paddles. Maybe I just didn't like it - colleague Rob Margeit enjoyed the CVT experience - but please leave me with a conventional car or manual.

In terms of feel, it's still fun to drive with a snappy and lively steering feel - it's a fast system that wraps well around corners. Somewhat related to the steering are the column-mounted turn signals next to the steering wheel, which feature a fun return-to-home configuration. I absolutely despised them at first as it was difficult to quit after turning on an ad, but rest assured you'll get used to them.

The brakes are also super strong and snappy, as is the stability control if you get it wrong. Both systems feel super attached in the wet and promptly get the car back on track.

The WRX's ride control feels good overall, only feeling slightly brittle with tiny imperfections that carry over to the cabin. The tS spec gets adaptive dampers that tighten the ride and keep the car nice and smooth cornering during spirited driving. You never really get jolted in the car when going over center bumps or speed bumps, it's just those little bumps that find their way.

I've noticed some road noise permeating the cabin when cruising freeways - it sounds like it's reverberating around your head near the sunroof. Otherwise the car was well assembled and there was no obvious creaking or rattling from any part of the fairing.

Diploma

The Subaru WRX has a long and colorful history, which is perhaps why we are so quick to judge it by its character and reputation. There is a lot to accomplish for a new 2022 generation to join the herd.

Parallels can be drawn with his single-minded driving character, which moves very quickly. But you just don't feel as connected as you used to, as the car somehow feels less raw and exciting than expected. Things like the muffled exhaust note go a long way in belittling this nameplate's legendary status.

However, you can't deny that it remains a good performance package. The interior is a comfortable and feature-rich place to while away 9-5 time, when it's then onto a fun, twisty road, giving you a rewarding driving experience.

But it's not as fun or emotional as it used to be, and doesn't offer that unique WRX feel. I'd happily drive a more affordable manual to see if it scrapes back some character, but I'd pass on this top-of-the-line WRX tS.
