We suspect anyone reading a 2022 WRX review probably knows about this stuff. But if the uninitiated wants to watch an extreme form of motorsport that combines breathtaking bravery and incredible vehicle handling talent, there are plenty of YouTube videos to be found.

In this arena, Subaru has developed serious skills. The expertise is then funneled into a road car and we can all enjoy the new 2022 WRX that marks the debut of a new generation.

It's built on a platform that's extremely strong and stiff, giving suspension engineers the best conditions to work their magic. Almost every area has been improved and refined over the 2021 model.

In early 2022, Subaru confirmed there will be no potent STI version of this latest WRX. While that's disappointing for enthusiasts, look for a future STI that features some sort of electrification.

Driving the 2022 Subaru WRX

There's big, fat torque delivery from 2,000 rpm all the way up to 5,200 rpm, near peak power. That means the 2022 WRX can keep accelerating with a fearsome boost.

The chassis can handle all that momentum. The first three panels have sporty tuned chassis, the GT top model adaptive dampers. Put the WRX on a track and it keeps its composure. Hardly any body swaying can be felt in fast corners.

The WRX's standard all-wheel-drive system features active torque vectoring, which transfers power to the wheels with the best traction, as well as fine-tuning how the car corners. The steering also reacts quickly.

Still, a 2022 WRX can still be an everyday car. This machine is more refined than its predecessor, with less noise, vibration and harshness.

interior comfort

Depending on trim, the new WRX can come with simulated suede upholstery, contrasting red stitching and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The GT trim's Recaro front seats really keep its occupants firmly in place, a good choice when a lot of track days are planned.

If it matters, the 2022 WRX has a decent 36.5 inches of rear legroom and 12.5 cubic feet of trunk space, with 60/40 split/folding rear seats. They all help the car qualify as both a practical and fun choice.

Exterior-Styling

With the exception of the base model (which has 17-inch alloy wheels), the 2022 WRX rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with summer tires. The front fenders are now aluminum to save some weight.

The hood has an air scoop to feed the intercooler. A sports exhaust system comes with dual outlets and stainless steel tips. And the WRX features a tailored set of aerodynamic improvements.

favorite functions

TURBOCHARGERED ENGINE
It produces 271 horsepower, the most muscle of any WRX sold in the United States. A Flat-4 configuration (see Under the Hood section) also results in a beneficially low center of gravity.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Yes, it seems counterintuitive not to recommend the standard 6-speed manual in a car built specifically for enthusiasts. However, the automatic version has a better all-wheel drive system, as well as more driver assistance and safety features. Some buyers get the manual and that's great - they have specific intentions for the car. For the rest, the automatic seems like a smarter call.

standard functions

The base version of the new WRX has no trim name. But he has four-wheel drive and a sporty tuned chassis. It also comes with full LED headlights, leather steering wheel and a self-dimming rear-view mirror.

The infotainment system includes two 7-inch touchscreens, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, two USB ports and satellite radio.

There are some minor driver assistance features like a rear seat reminder and automatic high beams, but acquiring forward collision mitigation and adaptive cruise control requires the choice of automatic transmission, which also brings with it a more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system.

Work options

A plus from the base comes premium equipment with 18-inch alloy wheels, heated door mirrors, wiper defrosters, LED fog lights, keyless entry/ignition, dual-zone voice-controlled climate control, heated front seats, and USB ports for rear passengers and an 11, 6 inch infotainment touchscreen.

This model is compatible with a power sunroof and Harman Kardon 504 watt/11 speaker audio system. When the automatic transmission is selected, it also adds an oil cooler, along with lane centering and automatic emergency steering for adaptive cruise control.

Limited trim adds a 10-way power driver's seat, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, power sunroof, steering-responsive headlights, simulated suede upholstery, and the Harman Kardon audio system. Like the premium option, the automatic transmission option comes with a few more additions, and this trim gets automatic rear braking.

GT trim is new territory for a Subaru WRX. This model comes standard with the automatic transmission and all the extras that come with it, as well as a custom setting for the selectable driving modes, Recaro sport front seats (the driver's seat has 8-way power adjustment), adaptive suspension and simulated suede dashboard covering.

Engine / gear

The most powerful production WRX (yet) sold in the United States, this 2022 model features a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. It's a 4-cylinder unit, but instead of being arranged upright/inline as usual, they're configured as two pairs, horizontally opposed. It's a Subaru thing. And by the way, a Porsche thing.

Power is 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This goes to a standard all-wheel-drive system via either a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission, which is optional in the first three trims but is part of the package on the GT model.

Premium petrol is required for optimum performance.

KBB Vehicle Rating and Rating Methodology

Our expert ratings come from hours of driving and number crunching to ensure you choose the best car for you. We experience and extensively analyze every new SUV, car, truck or minivan for sale in the United States and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we'll have our reviews.

We need new ratings every time a completely new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes onto the market. Additionally, we reassess these ratings when a new generation vehicle is given a mid-cycle refresh - basically a mid-life car (usually around the 2-3 year mark) is given a minor facelift, often with beefed up updates of features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of thin air or scratching them off a meaningless checklist, KBB editors put a vehicle where it belongs in its class. Before a car gets its KBB rating, it has to prove better (or worse) than the other cars it competes with as it tries to trick you into spending your money on buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a specific vehicle. We ask the right questions about the interior, exterior, engine and powertrain, ride and handling, equipment, comfort and of course the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is to efficiently commute to and from work in the city, to keep your family safe, to make you feel like you've made it to the top — or that you're on your way — or you do that Make you feel like you've finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take every vehicle we test through the mundane - parking, lane changing, reversing, cargo space and loading - as well as through the essentials - acceleration, braking, handling, interior quietness and comfort, build quality, material quality, reliability.
